Founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BCE, the ancient city of Paestum was an important center of the ancient Greek world known for its temples. 
 
The Temple of Hera II is one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in Italy.  Constructed in the ancient Greek Doric architectural style it features impressive columns, intricate carvings, and other decorative elements. The interior of the temple would have housed a statue of Hera, which was likely the focal point of the temple's religious rituals.  While the original statue is lost, a number of terracotta and stone fragments from the statue have been discovered at the site. These fragments suggest that the statue was highly decorated, with intricate drapery and other details.
