Located in the ancient Maya city of Tikal, Guatemala, is The Temple of the Great Jaguar.  Built around 700 AD, this imposing and impressive feat of architecture stands at 47 meters (154 feet) tall consisting of nine levels thought to symbolize the Maya underworld.  The temple’s construction was ordered by and served as a burial chamber for King Jasaw Kaan K’awil who is credited for defeating Tikal’s long rivaled city of Calakmul.  The temple’s contemporary name is likely derived from a carved lintel discovered in the top chamber depicting a king sitting upon a jaguar throne.
